Liposuction - Body Procedure

Liposuction is a popular surgical procedure for removing fat from particular areas of body. If you are considering liposuction surgery its very important for you to know if you will be suitably benefited by this surgery.

There are 3 main categories of people who seek liposuction

Category-I : People with nearly normal weight
Contrary to common perception these are the best candidates for liposuction.
Ideal candidates for liposuction are
• Men and women of normal weight who mainly want to improve their body shape and contours.
• People with fat deposits that are "trouble areas", where exercise and diet seem not to have any effect, like love handles, abdomen, hips, arms.
• People with good elasticity in their skin, so when the fat is removed, they will achieve a smooth appearance.
Safety: Safe
Results: Permanent

Category-II : Moderately overweight
Those who are 10-50 percent above their normal weight, with fat everywhere but relatively excessive in one or two body parts like hips, abdomen, thighs. These body parts can be selectively liposuctioned to bring in harmony with rest of the body.
These people seek liposuction because they are unable to get back in shape with their diet and exercise or they have a short term slimming target in a few months for some important event.
Safety: Liposuction of fat from one or two areas at a time with limited fat removal is safe.
Results: Results will need to be maintained. If the basic reason for weight gain like unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle remain then the fat is bound to reaccumulate. Results are long lasting and can even improve if person adopts healthy lifestyle.

Category-III : Grossly obese
Those who are 30 to 100 percent or more above their ideal body weight are not good candidates for liposuction. These people have bulges everywhere and sometimes they suffer from obesity related conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and hypercholesterolemia. They want liposuction for weight reduction. This group does not benefit from liposuction even though liposuction is possible.
Safety: Liposuction is not meant for loosing weight from overall body. Expecting to loose a more then 6-7 kgs of weight by liposuction can be risky.
Results: Poor, because limited amount of fat that can be removed in one sitting will not give satisfactory look. Unless they change their lifestyle drastically fat will come back.

Anaesthesia : General / Local
Surgery Time : 1-3 hours
Hospital Stay : Discharge same day or next day
Stitches : Usually none
Recovery : Walking and dinner same day. Recovery depends on how much fat was removed and from which part
Self Care : Getting dressed, combing hair, eating: Day of surgery
Preparing tea, heating food: Next day
Work : Cooking, dusting, light household work: 1 week
Driving, desk job: 1 week
How is it Done : Areas of fat deposits are marked. After giving anaesthesia, those a few 3-4 mm size cuts are made around the area and tumescent fluid is injected into the fat through the holes. Later with hollow metal cannulas (tubes) with holes near the tip are passed through the same holes into the fat (Under the skin and over the muscle). The cannulas are attached to a liposuction vacuum machine through a plastic tube. Due to the powerful suction of the machine and to and fro movement of the cannula, fat is broken down into small pieces and is sucked out into the jar attached to the machine in liquid form.

5 Steps to shapely body
Step One: Consultation
During the consultation, you can talk to Dr. Priti about the parts of your body you want to be liposuctioned. If you want many areas of body to be treated then she can help you select 2-3 most important areas that can be treated in one sitting and you can have the rest of the areas done in another sitting. You can also find out how much fat can be removed in one sitting.

You can see the representative clinical pictures of patients to satisfy yourself about the procedure and ask any questions regarding the results, and possible risks of the surgery.

You should come to the consultation prepared to discuss your medical history. This will include information about any medical conditions, drug allergies, medical treatments you have received, previous surgeries, and medications. It is important for you to provide complete information. You will be asked about your lifestyle and pattern of weight gain/loss.

Routine diagnostic tests to assess your fitness for surgery and anaesthesia will be ordered.

Step Two: Preoperative Evaluation
Once you have decided to undergo liposuction surgery, you will be evaluated for your fitness for anaesthesia and surgery by Dr. Priti or if necessary by the anaesthesiologist. Your diagnostic test reports will be studied. Dr. Pritishukla will examine you taking measurements and clinical photographs for your medical record.

You will sign the consent forms and will be given detailed preoperative instructions in writing.

Step Three: Surgery
You report at the hospital on the morning of surgery. Before taking you inside operation room part to be liposuctioned will be marked with you standing to shape them to desired size. Operation is under general or local anaesthesia or a combination of two and it is pain free.

Step Four:
After Surgery
After surgery there will be gauze padding and compression garment on the operated part. You can drink water after 4 hours and have some snacks afterwards if you had general anaesthesia and sooner in case of local anaesthesia. You walk and have normal dinner on same evening.

Step Five: Recovery
You will need some assistance initially. Many people light work in a week’s time. By the end of one month usually you are feeling quite normal and ready to resume all normal activities.
